Cage The Elephant Bravely Go ‘Unpeeled’ [Stream/Review]

first_imgIt’s been a big year for Cage The Elephant. This year, the group boasted a Grammy win, a well-received “Live And Unpeeled” tour earlier this year, and now, a new album, Unpeeled. Their winter tour served as a chance for the band to strip down and repurpose their songs, presenting more bare-bones remakings of some of the classics out of their catalog. The seamless transitions marked by string sections and dramatic pace shifts demonstrate the rock-solid power of Cage The Elephant’s material in the first place. Unpeeled serves as a remarkable document of a band ready to look at its songbook and wonder, “What if?”You can stream the entire album, then be sure to check out our thoughts on this provocative project below.“Cry Baby” leads off Unpeeled with a sound reminiscent of early British Invasion-era, psychedelic acts like Procol Harum. Vocalist Matt Shultz even uses a delay and chorus eerily reminiscent of the 60’s to capture this distinct tone. The clean organ work of Matthan Minster adds to this effect on the first single off the album, “Whole Wide World.” Crowd favorites like “Shake Me Down” and “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked” remind listeners that this is, indeed, a live recording.“Spiderhead” sees a lilting string arrangement that runs counterpoint to guitarist Nick Bockrath‘s distortion-tinged solo, which helps elevate the tune heavenward. This Americana break is a welcome departure from the first three tunes. “Take It Or Leave It” further shows that the Unpeeled concept is no one-trick pony. Dropping an infectious jam-based guitar lead into the more straightforward music style yields a very pleasing result, which ultimately becomes greater than the sum of its parts. Check out the just-released video for “Take It Or Leave It” below.Variations on the form take over about halfway through the selections. “Aberdeen” takes on a punk spaghetti-western vibe while “Golden Brown” would likely have been a chart hit in 1965. The timeless effect Cage The Elephant captures throughout the disc is remarkably and a testament to the field recording crew and the knob twisters that perfected the sound in the mastering process. The balance between live variations and jaw-dropping clarity is an impressive accomplishment unto itself. As the set of tunes winds to a close, there are still gems left to be unearthed, including an expressive take on the missed-connection sadness of “Cigarette Daydreams.” The rueful but powerful sing-a-long that ends the tune demonstrates the fan base’s readiness to follow Cage The Elephant’s lead, no matter which direction the band chooses. With the clean, simple take on their own catalog, Cage The Elephant shows a fearlessness that is admirable. In their quest to find a fresh angle, they actually have stumbled upon another marketable version of their project. It will be interesting to see what, if any, long-term effects this tour and new release have on their sound in the future. Or, even better, maybe, the band still has more tricks up their collective sleeves. Either way, Cage The Elephant has plenty to be proud of in their willingness to go Unpeeled.last_img read more

Colombian, Peruvian, and Brazilian Military Personnel in Joint Operations on Border

first_img The armed forces of Colombia, Peru, and Brazil have begun joint operations along their common border, operations that will extend for three weeks in order to counteract the activities of drug traffickers and guerrilla groups in the area, the Colombian Navy announced. Army and navy units from the three countries are participating in the operation, named “Colper Amazonia 2010,” in which they will carry out monitoring and patrol tasks in the part of the Amazon region where the borders of Brazil, Peru, and Colombia come together, Brig. Gen. Rafael Colón, in charge of the operation on the Colombian side, explained to AFP. The operation, which is taking place along the Putumayo and Amazonas rivers, seeks to attack the locations of drug-trafficking stockpiles, cut routes used by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC, a communist guerrilla group), and impede the activities of criminal gangs active in the area, the Colombian Navy indicated in a statement. “The crime that has taken root in this area needs the joint action of the three countries,” Colón affirmed. “We’ve destroyed five drug-processing laboratories and two hundred hectares planted with coca. In addition, we’ve seized 1.5 tons of solid raw materials and one thousand gallons of liquid raw materials for manufacturing cocaine paste,” the general specified. “Each military is acting within its own territory, but they’re exchanging information, and we’ve set up a joint command in the city of Leticia (Colombia), with officers from the three countries who are evaluating the activities,” he indicated. This military operation is taking place a month after the defense ministers of Colombia, Peru, and Brazil agreed in a meeting in Leticia to intensify cooperation along their borders, including even patrols in which the three countries would participate simultaneously. Data eXchange integration solution key to branded member experience for CFE Federal Credit Union members

first_imgA credit union’s brand is the emotional connection members feel for their most trusted financial services partner. The institution’s logo, colors and tagline – the “look and feel” behind the brand – represent the visual symbols and reminders of what the credit union really means to its members. There are several big reasons why credit unions strive to maintain their ability to consistently express these fundamental branding elements in all their service delivery channels, from the branch to their online and mobile presence. And they insist on this control when using third-party solutions that deliver data from other platforms into their own applications. The ChallengeCFE Federal Credit Union (CFE FCU; Lake Mary, FL; $1.6 billion assets) moved to the Symitar core data processing platform and wanted the ability to integrate the most current credit card account balance and transaction information into all of the credit union’s online and mobile service channels. Additionally, CFE FCU required the integration solution to support the credit union’s branding elements and deliver the same look and feel that members were accustomed to experiencing in the credit union’s branches and other service channels. The ApproachCFE FCU, a long-time PSCU Owner credit union, learned that PSCU’s Data eXchange solution provided the capability to deliver real-time credit card account data to the credit union’s core Symitar system and to its online and mobile member service platforms. Equally important to CFE FCU was Data eXchange’s ability to support its branding requirements and complete the vision of giving members the best possible online and digital service experience.Data eXchange can fetch the most current balance and transaction information for display to the member. Increased performance through Data eXchange will allow CFE FCU to build an even more complete member experience by adding more advanced technology and functionality.CFE FCU is building a complete member experience that will eventually replace the need for members to use Access Point. By utilizing Data eXchange the credit union is actively building and integrating advanced functionality such as the ability for a member to request a balance transfer onto their card from a card at another institution, which is available today. Upcoming functionality includes the ability to lock a card with the PSCU Card Lock feature, alerts, the ability to report a card lost or stolen, CURewards balances, eStatement enrollment and travel notifications.Data eXchange provides the data and functionality, and the credit union determines what components they want to utilize. Once integrated, the credit union can then display the information in their custom user interface in online banking and in their mobile applications. One of the most important aspects is the credit union will have complete control over the look and feel. Control over branding also creates an opportunity for the credit union to manage the specific features it chooses to make available from a particular service. This high level of control gives members the perception that their credit union possesses greater scale. The ResultsCFE FCU finds that with a low level of impact to development, they gain a high impact to the experience of members. This also improves the credit union’s ability to more effectively compete with other larger financial institutions. Additionally, CFE’s staff members saw a benefit since having access to the right information and functions through the online channels – combined with a great experience – ultimately results in fewer member calls to the contact center.A win for members and an overall win for CFE Federal Credit Union. 27SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr,Denise Stevens Denise Stevens leads PSCU’s Product Management, New Product Development, Digital Experience, Innovation and Strategic Vendor Alliances teams. Rodgers: Suarez can help Sturridge

first_img During Suarez’s 10-match ban, which came to an end last weekend, the England international scored 11 times as he assumed the responsibility of being the main focal point up front. In the Capital One Cup defeat at Manchester United in midweek, which marked the long-awaited comeback of Suarez, Sturridge did not look his sharpest as the Uruguayan took centre-stage. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is confident striker Daniel Sturridge’s recent good form will not be impacted by the return of Luis Suarez. “There has been a lot of relationships which have been formed in training and the fluency of the team the other night was excellent. “That will get better over time and of course once they play in the games.” Sturridge is still not working at full capacity after an ankle injury at the end of last season but Rodgers said Suarez’s return did not mean a rest for the England forward. “There is no taking (him) out. Even when he is not 100% fit he is still an amazing player, a player who will put defenders on the back foot. “He is a player who is very important for our team, he is a real catalyst at that top end.” While Suarez understandably lacked some sharpness in midweek Rodgers expects the 26-year-old to be fully up to speed very quickly, buoyed by the birth of a son on Thursday. “Luis became a father for the second time yesterday so he is on top of the world,” added the Reds boss. “He is only going to get better with his football fitness. “It is a great credit to himself that he continued to devote, once he got his mind set, time working hard on his fitness. “To go into a game of that level (against United), knowing the magnitude of that game, was exceptional really.” On Thursday, managing director Ian Ayre spoke about the damage done to Liverpool’s brand by the fall-out from the ban given to Suarez for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic. Rodgers said he now hoped everyone could move on. “I saw it and it was very unfair on Ian because he wasn’t talking about Luis Suarez but was talking very much about the coverage as a whole,” he said. “It is all behind us. We really need to focus on the now and the future and the most important thing is he is available. “I don’t think anyone wants to keep regurgitating that stuff all the time, it is something which is very much in the past. “We are looking forward and that is my only interest as a manager.” Ayre also suggested contract discussions would start with Suarez in the summer but Rodgers said that was not a priority. “He still has a few years to go yet so that is something the club will take up at the right time,” he added. “His (Suarez’s) only concentration now is as a player. “I thought he was terrific the other night considering he had been out for a long time and you could see the threat he posed.” Press Association But Rodgers insists both can play alongside each other – despite starting only eight times together since Sturridge’s arrival from Chelsea last January – and the Englishman will not be intimidated by the return of arguably Liverpool’s star man who scored 30 times last season. “I think it will only improve him (Sturridge) and make him a better player. Good players want to play with other good players,” said Rodgers. “I think you will see with how they will perform together that they can be a real threat. “It is not something that Daniel or anyone else will be worried about, their focus is on the team. “It is my job to manage the dynamics and the structure of the team. “We looked at a different system (3-5-2) the other night which would suit the players who were available and after a few days’ preparation and then a performance like that at Old Trafford it clearly showed we can work in that way if we want to. “For Daniel and Luis it worked really well. I have no worries about that. “We have been able to work on real-game situations in training (during Suarez’s suspension). last_img read more
