first_imgA Malaysia-based foundation called the Perdana International Anti-Corruption Champion Fund (PIACCF) has bestowed an award on Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan. The award ceremony on Tuesday evening also marked the launch of the new foundation, which sees itself as a support system for anticorruption officials who are intimidated, criminalized or threatened in carrying out their duties.Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad presented the accolade to Novel and to the late Malaysian deputy public prosecutor Anthony Kevin Morais – who was represented by his brother Richard – for their contributions to fighting corruption. Morais was abducted and murdered in 2015 while investigating a corruption case.Meanwhile, Novel had acid thrown into his face by two attackers in 2017, severely injuring his eyes.“I want to say thank you for the attention, support and award given by this international foundation,” Novel said after receiving the award, as quoted by news agency Anatara.“Just now we talked about the threats and risks that people who fight to eradicate corruption face. But when the world pays attention, it is no longer just the domain of each country, which I hope can provide new strength for everyone who chooses to fight corruption,” Novel said. KPK worker’s union head Yudi Purnomo Harahap said the KPK was proud of the award Novel had received. “[Eradicating corruption] is very risky, because fighting against corrupt officials is not an easy struggle. Those who commit graft often have a lot of money, connections, power and authority,” Yudi said. “Novel has dedicated the award to everyone involved in eradicating corruption in Indonesia.” (hol)Topics :last_img
